課程概述

To teach students to be aware of the current development in the selected Analytical Chemistry field by instructing students to read a series of research papers in the selected field, to organize the related knowledge for presentation in a professional manner, to write concise statements about the materials to be presented, and to present the subject in a seminar format.

課程目標
The course is designed for the Analytical Chemistry majors to be exposed to the most up-to-date development on theory, on instrument design, on analytical skill, on new analysis methodology, and on novel analytical research results that warrant close tracking.
課程要求
A. Subject of speech
Students are expected to know the development in selected Analytical Chemistry field for the subject of his/her selection in depth.

B. Paper selection
The journal papers selected for seminar presentations should be those a) published in the last five years, b) focusing on the field of your selected subject, c) published in the journals which has impact factor of >1.5. They should include at least three papers that are addressing the same subject from different analytical aspects with novel chemical approaches.

C. Abstract
1) Do not plagiarize.
Wikipedia: Plagiarism, as defined in the 1995 Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, is the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work." Within academia, plagiarism by students, professors, or researchers is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud and offenders are subject to academic censure, up to and including expulsion. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism )
2) Include title, authors, associations
the presenter’s name, ID, and e-mail address
abstract text
reference list
3) reference format
The reference format should be consistent for all references listed at the end of the abstract. One can refer to ACS journal for a typical format.

D. Presentation
1) Length.
The seminar speech itself should be limited to ~35 min, leaving about 15 min for discussions. It is important that the speaker provides his/her own insights/reviews about the papers he/she has selected for presentation.
2) Powerpoint
A Powerpoint presentation is expected for each seminar talk. The fonts in the Powerpoint should be large enough for everyone in the audience. Each slide page in the Powerpoint file has to be properly numbered.

E. Participation
Students are expected to participate in the discussion on the subject presented by the speaker of the day. Each student should at least ask one question during the class each day. The speaker is expected to read enough materials to know the subject of his/her presentation in depth. For any question that the speaker cannot answer properly in the class, he/she will have to write a report in response to the question and properly address the question in the next class period. The speaker of the next period will be responsible for writing down the questions for the current speaker to ponder upon later.

F. Attendance
Good, participatory attendance is essential to successful completing this course. It is suggested that you do not take this course if you cannot come to the class on a regular basis. Do not take this course if you have a class/activity schedule that is in some way in conflict with this class schedule. Students should present records of clinic visits for missing the class due to illness.

G. Other rules
1) As expected in very class, no student is allowed to conduct his/her own work during the class without paying attention to the speech.
2) Photography and videotaping of any form are not allowed in the classroom.
